[WATCH]: Funding Threatened Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs
(Sacramento, CA) -- Today, Assemblymember Bill Monning (D-Carmel) introduced Assembly Bill 669, a measure that would use tax revenue to fund critical childhood obesity programs that are facing severe cuts in light of the state budget crisis. At a press conference, Assemblymember Monning addressed the correlation between rising sweetened beverage consumption and the costly childhood obesity epidemic in California. If enacted, the sweetened beverage tax could generate $1.7 billion annually by levying a penny an ounce on every sugar-sweetened beverage sold in California, such as sodas, sweet teas, and sports drinks.
