[WATCH]: Dallin's Media Draft: A Sin Tax on Soft Drinks
Research Highlights: In 1942 the average American drank 720 ounces of soda per year By 2000 that number had jumped to 7200 ounces of soda per year (Clark 64) Nowadays soft drinks contribute about 8-9% of the caloric intake in kids and adults but those calories don't make them fuller, which means in all likelihood they're eating 10% too much. (Malik 274). Soda's addictive. Even discounting caffeine, soda consumption tends to increase at regular and predictable intervals regardless of age, weight or activity level, just like drug addictions. Plus, sody pop doesn't alleviate thirst or hunger so people don't even realize they're drinking more! (Beridot-Therond 81) The obesity is estimated to be the cause of 300 thousand American deaths
