State policies that ban sugar-sweetened beverages in schools help curb access to these beverages in the schools but don't seem to make a dent in overall consumption by middle school children, according to research published online ahead of print in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Consuming too much sugar is associated with: • Tooth decay • Overweight and obesity • High blood pressure Researchers from the University of Illinois surveyed 6900 children in middle schools located in 40 states in the United States about their ability to purchase and consume sugar-sweetened beverages at school.
