[WATCH]: An NHS Choices guide to diabetes (sign language)
Find information about type 1 diabetes here: www.nhs.uk This sign language video provides an overview of type 2 diabetes, including causes, symptoms and prevention. Please note: there is no audio track featured in this video. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic long-term condition caused by too much glucose in the blood. Glucose is a type of sugar. Normally a hormone called insulin controls the amount of sugar in the blood. Insulin is produced by the pancreas (a gland located behind the stomach). When food is digested and enters the bloodstream, insulin helps move any glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. In people with diabetes, the body is unable to break down glucose into energy.
