[WATCH]: State lawmaker aims to ban junk food from food stamp benefits
Alcohol, cigarettes, and foods that will be eaten in the store are just a few of the items that are off limits for those using the federal 'Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program', or "SNAP" Benefits. Since the state doles out the SNAP funds, the Legislature has a say over how they're spent, and one state lawmaker isn't so happy with the menu. Richard Raymond, a Democrat from Laredo, proposed a bill that would ban cookies, candy, chips and soda from Lone Star card purchases. "Those are junk food, the definition of junk food, and things that help lead to diabetes, heart disease and obesity," Raymond said.
