All About Lap Band Surgery

A lap band, or laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, is an inflatable silicone band that is installed around the top part of the stomach, by laparoscopic surgery, to treat obesity. Lap band surgery is a type of bariatric surgery tailored for patients who are obese, with a body mass index of 40 or greater. In some cases, patients with a body mass index between 32 and 40, who also have disorders, are admitted for the procedure.
The procedure works by restricting the amount of food the stomach can contain by placing an adjustable silicone band – the lap band – in the upper portion of the stomach.
